Best Road in Utah - Bar None

I decided that it was time, once again, to ride Huntington Canyon. The last time I was on that stretch of road was about 14 years ago. I've told many a tale about riding that canyon on my way back from a 3 day tour of Southern Utah with an old friend of mine. We came through there around the 3rd or 4th week of September and when we did, the canyon was on fire with color. I'd never seen anything like it.

So, around 9am this morning I sat at the computer and threw together a little 394 mile ride that would get me to Huntington Canyon and back. This is what I came up with....

  • South Jordan to Elberta via the west side of Utah Lake
  • East through Goshen to Santaquin
  • South through Mona to Nephi via 91
  • East to Fountain Green, Moroni and Mt. Pleasant
  • North to Fairview
  • East out of Fairview over Huntington Canyon
  • Into Huntington
  • Northwest to Price and around to 89 South (Thistle area)
  • South on 89 South to Fairview

The fall colors have just barely started showing themselves in the canyon. The Fairview side (west) already has a fair amount of reds and oranges popping here and there. The Huntington side (east) is still green to yellow and about every color in between. I would think the next two weekends will be fantastic.

After riding the canyon today, I can tell you that it will not be another 14 years before I ride it again. As a matter of fact I'm thinking about hitting it again next weekend or perhaps the weekend after that. Every inch of that canyon is a photograph waiting to happen. From one end to the other, a gift from Mother Nature.

If you are planning to head up, skip the Huntington to Price to Spanishfork HW6 portion. Too much construction and traffic. Next time, I'm going over it and turning right around and going back over the other way. Here's some pics of the ride. Click on them for higher res versions with more detail and color!

Wow! It looks like a beautiful ride. Thanks for sharing. How long did the trip take? Is there an open invitation if you go again in the next few weeks?

The route I went, even at bullet bike speeds, took me about 7 hours. My butt was completely kicked when I got home.

I'm not sure I'm going to make it up there again this fall. Depends on the weather I suppose. The summit is 9,655ft. If I do go again, I'll be sure to let you know. Open invite, of course.

Kent and I did Nebo this last weekend (193 miles) and I was "done" by the time we got back.

Am I getting too old for this sh!t? Some days, it feels like it. :-D
